Luckily, my mom was here to get a few things done around the apartment and sightsee in San Francisco. We had a fantastic week exploring 3 area Bed, Bath, and Beyonds, walking around our neighborhoods of Cole Valley and Inner Sunset, finding an AMAZING little fruit/veggie market a few blocks away, and really making our apartment feel like home. We found a perfect baker's rack on Craig's list for the entryway,
and even more thrilling: it fit in the car with the backseat down! It quadruples as a shoe rack, wine rack, key and mail spot, and eventually, picture display!
I love the idea of having fresh herbs, and this city seems like the perfect place to start. My mom helped with picking out the rosemary, thyme, and basil, and we had a repotting adventure on the back steps. I'm kind of obsessed with that massive basil (Trader Joe's!), and I've been harvesting a bit every day to snack on. I can't wait to make pesto! (side note: how adorable are those pots?!)
Adam joined us for dinner every night, and we tried out some new restaurants in the area. On Friday, one of his co-interns had a dinner + game night for his intern class, and all 3 of us had a great time. One of the other interns brought her dad, which definitely made my mom feel more at ease :) It was my first time meeting most of them, and everyone was friendly, happy to be together, and extremely welcoming. I'm excited that we will continue spending time with such great people over the next 4 years!
Adam had BOTH weekend days off (though he did have to work overnight on Saturday...yuck), so we took advantage by taking the muni (metro system) downtown to the Ferry Terminal Farmer's Market, which was pretty much incredible. We met my friends Liz and Kim and explored every single corner. The fruit was fresh and delicious, the people were friendly, and there were tons of craft stands all around. After a while, we got sandwiches and sat on the steps at the center to people watch. A perfect location and a perfect city for this past-time. Eventually, Adam came back to nap, and my mom and I topped off a great last day with gelato (PS: weather was sunny and warmish all but 1 day last week!).
While it was sad to say goodbye to my mom, it was also nice for me and Adam to enjoy a day alone for virtually the first time since I got here. He was supposed to finish at 8am, which turned into 10, so I met him for breakfast at the hospital before heading to Uhaul to rent a pick-up truck. I wish I had brought my camera: Adam and I navigating San Francisco neighborhoods in a clunker with a leather couch in back. Yup, that happened. My principal happened to be selling a couch, so we are now the proud owners of a new sofa:
It fits perfectly in our living room and lightens the dark wooden paneling up a bit. There's even room for an end table or 2!
After a much-needed nap in the afternoon, we headed to the Presidio to be outside before having a fun and relaxing dinner at Adam's friend Liz's. Unfortunately, this is what it looked like:
Hello, summer in SF! Regardless, we walked around for a while and tried to stay warm and out of the wind. Adam l.o.v.e.s. the ocean, and it's a nice reminder that even after a rough day of work or overnight call, it's never too far away.
Hopefully the next update will be that the movers have arrived and we are living amongst boxes of warm clothes and real dishes!
