Golden Weekend

What a glorious weekend! We got to spend 2 whole days together for the first time since Adam moved in early June. Golden weekends = when residents have both Saturday and Sunday off = amazing.

It started off right when Adam came home at 7:15 on Friday (that's usually his longest day, so this was a huge deal!). I was preparing for his late night by making our first totally home-made dinner in an unpacked kitchen, so he chatted with me and his family while I cooked.  On the menu: spaghetti squash with home-made pesto (harvested from our basil plant), crunchy tofu, and roasted veggies. Adam didn't want to be in another post-work day picture, so I did the honors:

We then started Saturday off by chatting with the Lewkowitz/Abelson/Pratt-almost-Lewkowitz clan and enjoying a yummy brunch. The majority of the day was spent finishing the unpacking process by putting away clothes, books, suitcases, and as much other stuff as we could. It was a team effort that required a lot of patience, organization, and creativity. Oh, and goofiness, obviously!
There was a long purple ribbon hanging from the light in our closet, so it became Adam's headband when we cut it off (if it managed to fit, it had to be worn!). He then found my bulletin board UNC fabric for school, which had to be a cape. Clearly!

Our newly engaged friends Liz and Julius arrived late in the afternoon, so we hung out for a while before meeting up with Adam's study abroad friends, Liz and Colby. Adam had a great time catching up over drinks at Liz's, and I really enjoyed meeting Colby and hearing their ridiculous stories. We then jetted back in our area to meet Adam's co-intern Colleen and Liz, Julius, and a few of their friends for more drinks and dinner. Lesson learned: this is not New York, so we must decide on a DD. Such a change from the land of subways and taxis! No biggie: Adam definitely deserved lots of beer, so I didn't mind rehydrating with water :)

Liz and Julius slept over so that we could wake up this morning and head to Big Basin State Park to hike. It was a long and windy drive, but we got to see beautiful mountains and an adorable historic town, Saratoga. The hike was a 4 mile loop, and mainly close to the road. It was full of massive redwoods, like the one we're standing inside
a disappointingly small waterfall (not quite "as advertised"),
and more gorgeous massive trees.

We originally wanted to hike in Muir Woods, but thought it would be crowded during this sunny weekend, so this was a perfect alternative to see redwoods. We are so excited for Liz and Julius, and it was a fantastic way to spend the day and celebrate with them!

En route home, we realized that our sunny, warm, day was soon to turn chillier:
I know you can see that layer of white (photo taken from the car). Nope, it's not snowy mountains in the distance. Just another foggy summer day in San Francisco! We were about 25 minutes south of our neighborhood when I noticed the thick layer of fog hovering over our new city. This isn't just a California myth - the temperature dropped from 89 to 63 in an hour. Welcome home!

We ended our first full weekend together by running errands and relaxing with a delicious dinner. Altogether, a fantastic first of many "golden weekends"!
