I cannot believe I allowed this much time to pass before posting - so sorry! Between work (BOTH of us!), settling in, and the OLYMPICS, I keep forgetting to write an update. Here goes...
WORK
Adam officially finished his 1st rotation last Friday! He absolutely loved working on the labor floor, though the hours were long and frustrating at times (ex: 2.5 hour C-section on Sunday night, so he got home close to 10pm...). We celebrated by going to a get-together at an R2's (2nd year resident) apartment in our neighborhood. All of the interns were thrilled and so excited for the next steps, which was great to see. Adam started his ambulatory rotation on Monday, which basically means he's going to various clinics throughout San Francisco. So far, he's been to the local jail (yup, reading that right), an adolescent health clinic, and San Francisco General, and today he's at Parnassus (the hospital by us). In Adam's words, it's a great reminder that he loves adolescent medicine as well, even though he's sad not to be on labor and delivery.
PS: this is what happens when he gets home "early" on L&D and needs to practice one- and two-handed knots at 9pm (so cute, right?!):
I officially started orientation at KIPP SF Bay Academy on July 20th. There are 5 newbies, and we had a full week of orientation last week with the administrators, which was helpful to get to know each other, learn about the school, and grow acclimated to the expectations of us and our students. This week, everyone came back, and I've met my 6th grade team, gotten into my classroom, and learned more about what to expect for the year. People are friendly, happy to be at SF Bay, and very driven and dedicated. I'm excited to continue working with fantastic teachers, though I do miss Brooklyn East a lot. I know that my experience last year will absolutely help me at this new school as far as what to expect, how to manage the enormous workload, working with students, etc. However, the theme of the KIPP network out here seems to be "We're not New York, we have no money, but we will work even harder to get the same results!" Ummmm now I really know how good I had it...? It's shocking though - each school in NYC gets about $17,000 per pupil, whereas in California, it's closer to $5,800. Insane. Maybe that's why I have 33 students in each class? The good news is that it seems like everyone is very happy, has been at the school for a while, and truly loves the work that they do. Makes me very excited to be here!
APARTMENT
On it's way! We were actually thrilled to hang up a ton of stuff last weekend. Makes it feel more homey for sure. I've loved doing tons of cooking and some baking, and we're still loving laundry. That won't every get old! We've actually had people over twice for Olympics-watching. Yay for space for people to sit and a hooked-up TV! We're headed to an awesome antique market in Alameda this weekend to look for a coffee table, so that should pretty much round things out on the furniture front. Pictures to come for sure!
FAMILY
Last week was a very family-driven week, with Adam's Uncle Kip in town Tuesday night and the Gieslers (Adam's aunt/uncle/cousins) the rest of the week. We had a great time with Uncle Kip for dinner on Tuesday night, catching up on the family and how everyone's doing. Then we got to spend Weds - Fri evenings with the Gieslers, which was fantastic! Each night, Adam and I commented on how we always have fun with them and love spending time with his cousins, Josh and Eric. It was a wonderful way to celebrate my first week of work and Adam's last week on L&D.
LIFE
We've managed to be social a lot over the last week, much to our surprise! A lot of it was with family, but we also had a few of Adam's co-interns over to watch the Olympics on Saturday (all I will be doing for the next 2 weeks. I LOVE the Olympics and could watch all day!), and his college friend, Ginger, over on Sunday. Then my friend from home, Sarah, was in town for work on Monday, and she spent the night with us (more Olympics!). It was wonderful to catch up and see her, and I hope to do so again soon, now that she's only a quick flight away in LA.
That's pretty much all that's going on here in San Fran. (I still have moments where I'm like "Ohmygod I cannot believe I live in California!") More regular updates to come!
