While Adam should probably be writing this, when you don't have time to eat, drink, or use the bathroom, writing about your hectic pace is not quite a priority. Yes, you read that correctly. He brings several Clif bars with him when he leaves at 5:00am, and that's the only solid food he gets until coming home at varying hours of the night. Yesterday, he said he was able to get away to the bathroom ONCE in all that time. It seems ridiculous that the people in a medical field aren't even able to care for themselves or keep themselves healthy!
This is exactly what I expected for his residency: getting up way too early, coming home anytime between 7:30 (woohoo!) and 10 (last night), and being utterly exhausted. Adam is also working straight through the weekend and this week, leading to an overnight call on Saturday the 14th. I hate seeing him home so late and beyond tired, but feeling like he still has so much to do. There is no phone or internet service on the L/D floor (labor and delivery), so he has a ton of emails to catch up on and articles to read, aside from hoping to sit for a minute or two and catch up.
We've been able to celebrate the "early" nights with our first "home-cooked" dinner and a fantastic find nearby in Golden Gate Park: a food truck festival! Apparently, it takes place every Thursday from 4 - 9pm, so even if he's not home yet, I can go get us a fun treat and bring it home. Adam felt like that small trek out made a huge difference in feeling like he had a life outside of the hospital. I'm looking forward to finding other exciting things in San Francisco that we can explore together.
Luckily, he feels like he is constantly learning and improving, and he really does love what he's doing and the people he's working with. Just last night, after his longest day yet (with a whole week to go before a day off), he said that two different grandmothers came up and thanked him profusely for bringing their grandbabies safely into the world. They also said they will always think of him as a part of their families :) When he was repeating this with a huge smile, he said that these are the little things that keep him going and remind him that, as exhausted as he is, he's truly enjoying his work.
Adam will change rotations every 6 to 8 weeks this year, so only 3 more of L/D!
